Initial counseling sessions are typically 85minutes long and consist of gathering background health information such as your diagnosis, a diet recall, weight history and other relevant information. We then discuss your goals and collaborate to make SMART goals-this gives us a specific frame work to measure your progress over time. Typically there is enough time to go over some education basics including going over macronutrients (protein, carbs, fats) and the "plate method" which is a simple visual to create a well rounded meal. We make sure to end the session with 1-3 short term goals for you to begin working on.
Follow up sessions usually start off weekly for about 4 weeks while we build and adjust the initial stages of your plan. These sessions often involve reviewing food journals, discussing wins or trouble shooting difficulties that you ran into. We always collaborate on your goals, and my philosophy is to aim for small baby steps that you can confidently achieve over a long period of time, not setting huge goals that feel overwhelming! Over time as you are hitting your goals and understanding the concepts we discuss we will spread meetings out as appropriate.
